Calendar Girl Blog: Assessing the Future
When I posted yesterday's groan about dragging myself to the finish line of the 2006 calendar season, I mentioned that there were a thousand contributing factors to my malaise.
Not to be glum, but here's a few more that flesh out my feeling a bit more.
Calendar Girl does not have the answers to the world's problems. Instead she's got a bloody huge bag of questions that no one wants to be asked.

Not to be glum, but here's a few more that flesh out my feeling a bit more.
- I believe, as a species, we are in BIG trouble. This is a new belief that I've come to over the last couple of year's. I used to think we'd collectively wake up. I don't anymore. It's pretty clear that greed and power has a firm grip on the short curlies of the world and it's getting stronger.
- I believe the world's people are getting progressively stupider/ more stupid. I ask around and learn that people plug into their televisions for 4 plus hours a day, sucking up the most idiotic messages all the while claiming they have no time for anything. We are dumbing down. Our common sense is eroding. We believe what the media tells us.
- No one is thinking of the future of anything. Just look on the highway. What are people driving? SUV's. What are people doing when they're driving? Talking on cell phones. Neither of these predominant behaviors are sustainable or safe.
- There's a pill for everything. Sad because your dog died? Take a pill. Going through a divorce? Take a pill. Can't get it up or don't want it in? Take a pill. We've got medication coming out our ying yang AND, into our water supply, thanks to all the human runoff.

LOL, I was just prowling around & stumbled on your blog. What made me laugh is your use of the word 'stupider'. It should be 'more stupid'. Or was this intentional?
Bethie,
Perfect illustration!

Hy, Sue!
Your assessment and ours align perfectly.
The medical industry (sic) is a classic example of "don't fix the root cause (that may be too painful to have to deal with, right?), just pop this pill to fix the symptoms/feelings." Then off we go, popping another pill to fix the side-effects of the first pill - and so on, ad nauseam (quite appropriate!) When we see the pharmaceutical industry in a philanthropic role, then (perhaps) we'll start to believe more in their products. However, if we get better, they don't make a profit. Go figure!
As you so accurately observed, television is the insidious way into people's minds and how well it is used to control and manipulate. We do not watch television, either.
Our question is, where will it all end? Not having a clue as to the answer (!), our response has been to start walking our talk. We have lived off-grid for five years now, with our own renewable-energy power system, and are seeking to build an intentional community/family, since it seems that one possible way through all this mess is to "reinvent the wheel" as far as human social structure is concerned. No debt, only organic food (home-grown whenever possible), sustainable living practices regarding power and how we use the land, and the older social structure of cooperative and collaborative humans living together with shared goals and shared dreams, shared laughter and love, shared sorrows and down times.
We feel sad about human society right now, but the human spirit is pretty indomitable. If we collectively do not destroy our home (Earth) and ourselves, then maybe some such groups as we envision could actually survive and go on with renewed wisdom and a future? Who knows? All we intend to do is walk that pathway in hope that we may plant a seed for the future.
By the way, are you familiar with HAI - The Human Awareness Institute (http://www.hai.org)? They are doing some excellent work in re-awakening people and trying to create a win-win situation.
Thanks for being there, for doing what you do, and for caring enough to bother.
Namaste.

G and L,
Good timing with your comment I must say. It was a tricky week for me for various reasons....and my good old confidence in my convictions was bleeding from the ears.
Best of luck with your community. Walking the talk is the only way I can see to.
Best to you both,
Sue
