Calendar Girl Blog: David and Goliath

This is a photo of the original statue of David by Michelangelo. I took this shot while on a trip to Europe in 1983.

According to Wikipedia, "the statue is meant to show David after he has made the decision to fight Goliath but before the battle has actually taken place. It is a representation of the moment between conscious choice and conscious action."

Calendar Girl feels a kinship with David. My Goliath is the cultural attitude that supports and encourages breast implants in healthy women, promotes extreme thinness and reminds women that they are sexual objects.

Calendar Girl Blog: Blogger

My blog posts are a tad irregular thanks to some difficulty I'm having with my blog platform. I'm told Blogger is working out the problems. Until they get their software working well, this blog maybe a bit hit and miss.

Should you wonder what is going on at Breast of Canada headquarters in between posts, you can be pretty sure that Calendar Girl will be selling, selling, selling.

Calendar Girl Blog: Wood Burning Energy

My annoyance is slowly burning out. Instead of having a hissy fit, I chose to stacked wood as a way to dissipate my negative energy. Four cord of heavy hard wood now sits properly stacked and ready for my woodstove.

I started promptly at 8am. By applying the squat and lift technique, my back muscles are still in good shape. However both my hands feel like clubs at the end of my arms. Makes typing a bit tricky.

Physical activity is a fine way of working out frustration. It's one of the consolations of publishing the calendar. I don't need to join a gym and lift weights. I simply take orders for calendars and cart them to the post office.

Calendar Girl just noticed a rogue snowflake dancing past her window. Makes her throbbing hands seem less painful.

Calendar Girl Blog: Get Informed

Please be forwarned. I'm pretty much fully and completely annoyed today.

Our city is nearing an election for the municipal level of government. Currently we're in the hands of a majority herd of dinosaurs. These out of date, lack of vision, penny pinchers want to do away with the gains we've made in recycling, reclaiming and reducing our garbage, deal with our future drinking water situation by running a pipe line a hundred kilometers from Lake Erie instead of educating the public on water conservation and won't pass a pesticide bylaw that dozens of local doctors are pushing for.

You know. Silly little stuff like that.

Thanks to Breast of Canada, my in-box routinely gets information that doesn't seem to make it to mainstream media. For instance, the Prevent Cancer Now newsletter that arrived this week starts out with this sobering statement.

"According to the most recent Canadian cancer statistics, more than one third of all females and close to 50% of all males in Canada will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives."

Good bloody grief! What could possibly be preventing us from taking action NOW.

See. I'm all steamed up.

Anyway, Calendar Girl would like to direct you to a source of information that may help you become annoyed too.

Have a good read.

Calendar Girl Blog: Computer Woes

It's been a frustrating day in my blogosphere.

Blogger, my blog interface, had no interest in letting me post. Instead of packing it in for the day, I continued to try and try and try. Stupid yes. But typical too. Sometimes I can be like a dog with a bone. No doubt that's part of the reason I'm still in the calendar business.

Other frustrating news in computer land - my order page is acting up. Some orders make it in. Others disappear without a trace. My apology to those who are not getting the service that they'd like. My peeps are looking into this now.

Sometimes Calendar Girl longs for the days before computers. Today would be one of those days.

Calendar Girl Blog: Monday Monday

My health has improved considerably. Thanks for asking.

Besides making a trip to both the post office and the bank today, the calendar business is pretty much chugging along as usual. I feel boring reporting this to you.

Perhaps I need to shake things up a bit and run topfree through the streets of Guelph with a Breast of Canada banner tied to my waist.

Right then. Calendar Girl wonders if the head cold might have left permanent damage.

Calendar Girl Blog: The Plague

I'm sad to report that despite my efforts - wearing a necklace of garlic, sterilizing my hands every two minutes, eating vitamin C laden fruit - the dreaded cold plague arrived on the left side of my head yesterday afternoon at approximately 4:08 pm.

Since my head turned from solid to liquid it has been difficult to perform tasks that require the use of my hands, such as blogging. They are now busy wiping said body part and delivering "plenty of fluids" to my system.

Calendar Girl will resume her regular programming as soon as 'things dry up.'

Calendar Girl Blog: Breast Cancer Statistics

“Statistics tend to bounce off you without making much of an impression, but meeting people and listening to the stories behind those statistics cuts a path right to your heart.”

Diane C. Brunet, Breast Ambassador/ Sales Person of the Month/ Miss March 2007

Calendar Girl would agree.

Calendar Girl Blog: Breast Ambassador

For amusement, I Googled the term Breast Ambassador during an idle moment on the weekend. Almost three pages of blog posts and references to Breast of Canada popped up.

Feeling pretty plunky from the experience, I tried the same thing with Yahoo.

Once again I hollered BINGO. The Breast Ambassador linker-oos scrolled down the first few pages yet again.

Calendar Girl wonders....will a Wikipedia listing be the next great advance for Breast Ambassadorship?

Calendar Girl Blog: My October View

In the last 24 hours, we've had rain, sun, snow and wild wind ripping through our city

This tree (as you may know if you've been following along) is outside my office window. In January, it looked like this. Back in May, my view had changed to this. By June, I was thankful for this look. And now, I've got this riot of colour as you can see above.

I spent an hour trying to load this photo. I've started shooting in higher resolution for printing purposes but I needed to scale back on the pixels to a lower resolution before posting on this blog. I tried a dozen different approaches before this semi success. I say semi because I'm not sure what I did differently. And this is not the photo I wanted to post.

There are days when Calendar Girl feels like the technology game is not built for here. Just when she thinks she knows what she is doing, something simple like posting a photo trips her up.

Calendar Girl Blog: Miss March 2007

Models in the Breast of Canada calendar are not expected to expose anything other than their breasts for the project. But occasionally, like in this instance, a model will step forward and let her identity be known to the press.

This morning, The Montreal Gazette features a very well written story about Miss March 2007.

With barely a blush
Beaconsfield grandmother becomes Miss March to help fight breast cancer

Calendar Girl hopes the link works for you.

Calendar Girl Blog: Get By With A Little Help

Well then.

Two of my bloggy blogger gal pals that I met on the Great Adventure to BlogHer have been boobing up the blogoshere with big time Breast Ambassadorshipness.

Ahoy boobettes!! Shiver me nipples!!

But that's not all. One of my first Club Meno members saw fit to write a supportive breast boosting post too.

The kindness of friends and strangers should never be underestimated.

Spanning from Prague to Oregon and of course ultra boobville California, these women have all been singing Breast of Canada praises to their www-worlds. Fa, la, la, la, tra, la, la dooh wap de bop.

Calendar Girl invites you to check out their blogs to find out what boob-e-lious means to them. Of course after you do that, you'll want to add them to your blogroll.

Calendar Girl Blog: Same Same

I just checked through my blog archives from last year. According to this post written on October 11, 2005, I had 1,000 calendars left.

Guess what.

As of today, I have 1,000 calendars left.

Calendar Girl isn't sure if this is good news or simply not bad news.

Calendar Girl Blog: Art

It's been a big art acquiring week for me. Yesterday, I picked up a parcel at the post office with this striking painting, beautifully framed, inside.

The Albion is a famous watering hole in our city. I cyber-met the artist, m.j.stubbs because he blogs his art. I feature m.j.'s blog on one of my other blogs, Blog Guelph and have featured his work in a couple posts. Blog, blog, blog.....

Art piece number two arrived prior to art piece number one. Last Friday at the conclusion of the calendar launch this painting was gifted to me. A couple of year's ago, the multi-talented Greg Denton asked if he could paint my portrait - again. I was part of a 400 portrait series he did of people from Guelph which you can view here.

Greg donated the second painting of me to last Friday's art auction. Given my non-disposable income situation of the moment, (she says hoping that it is in fact 'for the moment') I was not able to bid on it. Instead, Jen Turnbull, the auction organizing queen did some behind the scene fundraising, acquired the reserve bid for the piece then presented it to me at the close of the evening.

Fourteen people donated to Jen's request for fund. I'm still stunned by their generosity.

Calendar Girl loves yea ole 'what goes around comes around' karma saying that gets tossed into a situation when things go badly. But it's equally true when kindness is extended. These acts of kindness will fuel other acts and the good vibe will continue.

Thank you m.j.stubbs! Thank you Jen Turnbull. Thank you Greg Denton. And thank you to the 14 people!

Calendar Girl Blog: Auction Time

Auctions, auctions everywhere..... check out my favourite charity the Canadian Breast Cancer Network's latest fundraising initiative by reading this post from them.

"As you know, on October 1 we launched our first ever Breast Cancer Awareness Month Online Auction to raise funds for the Network. Please go there now and help support us!

The Network’s Dartmouth-based president, Dianna Schreuer, herself a breast cancer survivor, says, “The Canadian Breast Cancer Network’s online auction is a wonderful opportunity to do your holiday shopping while contributing to a worthwhile cause.”

From October 1-31, 2006, more than 400 items will be up for auction! New items will be listed almost daily, so users should be sure to check back regularly. There are items from across the country, especially live theatre and film, jazz, blues and folk festival tickets, fitness clubs, museum and art gallery passes, delicious spa offerings, hotel, ski and golf packages, sports tickets and memorabilia, restaurants, comedy clubs and dinner theatres, and tickets to lots of tourist attractions! Other items include audiobooks, agendas and calendars, children’s books, toys and games, cosmetics, adult fiction and non-fiction, magazine subscriptions, photography and music (CDs).

Visit the auction website here and start surfing for items to bid on. To bid, you will need to complete a simple registration form (on the site). Items will be available between 7 and 20 days. See the Help text on the site to learn about proxy bidding – ideal for that item that you must have!

Thank you to the auction webspace developer and designer, RealDecoy, and to the hundreds of donors, who are listed on the auction site!

For more information, contact CBCN at 1-800-685-8820 or cbcn@cbcn.ca ."

Calendar Girl wishes them 'robust' bidding. Smirk.

Calendar Girl Blog: Sales People Of the Month

Pictured here are my sales people of the month.

Diane and Pierre arrived in Guelph from Montreal for last Friday's launch having already sold 148 calendars to their friends and associates.

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY EIGHT.

After giving a very passionate speech to the audience about what was motivating them and how much fun they were having, I was able to honour them both with their very own BREAST AMBASSADOR tee shirts. Then during the auction Pierre bought the fetching pink wool boa for Diane.

But wait. They're not satisfied with their sales career yet. No, they've set their sights much higher. Now fortified with official tee-shirts, the very snappy breast ambassador salute and of course the boa, calendars are being sold to everyone with a wall.

Calendar Girl keeps pinching herself to ensure that all this calendar selling isn't really some twisted dream. So far, the bruises indicate that yes, Calendar Girl is living this wonderful reality.

And she wonders. Would anyone else like to give this a go?
