Calendar Girl Blog: Finding the Middle of Normal
Bare with me.
Let's face it. The Breast of Canada calendar does not fit into the middle of normal. Ironic as that is given the gals who choose to be models are pretty much your everyday types. But the packaging of the calendar, what with it being all arty and sepia toned with messages about health and stuff to watch out for pushes BoC into some other world far, far away from the middle of normal. Middle of normal gets pornography. Middle of normal doesn't want real breasts, doing nothing special except being themselves.
I suspect if you did a bit of accounting, you'd find the middle of normal or MON as I may now refer to it, to be a pretty rich spot. I'm guessing that it's the 'place to be' if you're trying to sell something, crowded with folk who don't really want to stand out in anyway and aren't interested in 'changing the world' but have money to throw around.
Here's the latest lightbulb in a higher wattage than before. I need to get me closer to the middle of normal if I'm going to be able to keep publishing. Which means one of two things. At least. Either I change my products look to fit in to MON. Or I get MON to see what I'm doing as normal. The former would be easier if I wasn't such a freak. The later is a David and Goliath gig.
Calendar Girl hates being so conflicted. She wishes she had a trust fund to rely on so she could leave middle of normal to being middle of normal. But reality exists. And so does her dipping bank account.

Moving the middle of normal to a more socially aware normal is a big task.
Here is my thought on this.
Everyone with a breast of Canada calendar in your kitchen or home office needs to take that calendar to work. Put it on display and explain its goals and purpose to the people who seen squirmy in its presence.
Sue, I wrote something else the night I wrote the submissions I gave you already. I wasn't sure of its use, and its a little heavy, but I think it is appropriate here.
Individuals do not evolve; communities do. This is true both biologically and socially. Biologically, it matters not what goes on in an individual’s life, but if there are enough individuals showing a specific trait that is beneficial and increases the chance of producing offspring with similar traits, that trait is selected for, and the community evolves. In the animal kingdom, this trait is the result of a genetic ‘mistake’. Humans have bypassed this ‘mistake-driven biological evolution’ with our healthcare strategies, and our distancing from the predator/prey scenario. However, I believe that humans have taken on a new process of social evolution. Again, the impact is not measurable in an individual, but can be triggered or sparked by an individual or group of individuals. The resulting change in the attitudes and behaviours of a community is a measurable evolution of our social existence. The Breast of Canada initiative is one such spark.
Stop worrying about normal, or the middle of normal today. You didn't start this initiative to perpetuate the status quo. 5000 women a year in North America undergo risky breast surgery because of a perceived inability to fit into the 'middle of normal'. You are changing this, do not give up now.
