Calendar Girl Blog: Making Money

Blogspot had a wee hiccup yesterday just about the time I wanted to post. Eventually I gave up and joined my neighbors outside.

Currently we're basking in what can only be described as heavenly weather. Usually I'm intune with such joys but this life of blogging has me somewhat tied to my office. But after the frustration of not being able to post passed and the reality of my options unfolded, I was out of here like a fart in a windstorm.

As more of my friends become familiar with blogging thanks to my incessant chat, I note two distinct camps. The least computer friendly offer their condolences for my ball and chain existence while the tech advanced have a million questions.

Both groups want to know how I make money.

When I explain that a blog is like a publication with its own readership, just like a magazine most people understand the concept. Once I point out that specific ads that relate to the blogs content appear on my sites, and that when readers click on those ad links, I get paid, the clouds of confusion roll across their eyes.

Explaining the pay-per-click theory is tricky for some reason even though it makes perfect sense to me. Ads appear for free. When someone clicks into an ad, it costs the advertiser money....which in part is paid to me, even if the clicker doesn't make a purchase. In essence, my site has lead my reader into another persons domain. For this, I get rewarded.

There is a marketing theory that claims the consumer requires an average 17 views of a product or brand before that product or brand becomes familiar and before a purchase is made. This further explains the pay-per-click system. Advertisers know that for their product to be purchased, it must be recognizable. So even though you may click on an ad and into an advertisers website then leave without making a purchase, you are now slightly acquainted and on your way to the magic 17 views.

Yesterday I sold my first ad link that was not pay-per-click. Instead, the advertisers website link appears on a page of their choice, for a set annual fee. I happen to know how popular the chosen page is, how many views it gets in a year so was able to gauge the value. I'm hoping to establish more of these types of relationships as my readership grows and my blogs and website ranks higher with search engines.

A year ago, Calendar Girl could not have written this post. She was floating on a cloud of confusion herself with some but not a full deck of information. Thanks to merely 'showing up' each and every day, the gaps are filling in.

Playing in the wild west blogosphere requires one thing for sure. Saddling up .
