Calendar Girl Blog: Almost Final Round

With no drum roll or fan fare, Gareth and daughter Tessa walked across the street last night to present me with the completed draft of the 2007 Breast of Canada Calendar. Like a comfortable old couple we chatted briefly about timelines, press dates and odds and sods before parting ways. Our casualness with this process has evolved from a much more heightened state of being from the early days. Although I miss the electricity from the past, I appreciate the mature zen-like state of today. Working with Gareth this last six years has been a distinct pleasure and joy.

Within the first two minutes of review, I spotted two errors that I had previously missed. This is precisely why I engage fresh eyes to do a round of proofing for me. I'm simply too familiar with the pages to notice the mistakes. Especially when the mistakes are mine.

Seeing the close to final draft made me smile. Although our layout is pretty much established, the photos are different every year. This years batch more or less connect with the theme women and work. And almost every shot arrived by way of our photo contest.

By allowing other peoples creative vision to grace the pages of the calendar, I get the pleasure of stepping back and becoming the audience. I try to imagine the state of frenzy that must have rippled through the minds of the six gals from the prairies that posed in Phototron booths found in malls. Or the woman with the stunning feather mask riding her horse, mastectomy scar visible. The five women positioned around the board table discussing the hand drawn picture of a breast cracked me up. And I noticed that despite Miss January the organic farmer milking a goat topfree, it is her hands that grab my attention.

Calendar Girl is pleased with the diversity and flow of the images for 2007. She sees a confidence in the models that is very calm.
